Wheelchair springs

Aims

Through an Innovate UK grant, we worked with the makers of Loopwheels: a vibration-reducing wheel with integral suspension for wheelchairs. The aims of this project were to improve production rates and volume capability by replacing the existing thermoset springs with thermoplastic springs, while retaining performance.

Outcomes

We achieved the following:

  • Developed the capability to manufacture leaf springs in under 5 minutes
  • Demonstrated our high production volume capability
  • Significantly improved the tunability of spring rates
  • Reduced process complexity by 86%.

Other applications

Our leaf springs offer high performance and lower costs and could be suitable for a wide range of applications, from heavy commercial vehicles to medical products like prosthetic legs.
